Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media

March 17, 2011

Military's 'sock puppet' software creates fake online identities to spread pro-American propaganda

The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda.

A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world.

The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.

The discovery that the US military is developing false online personalities – known to users of social media as "sock puppets" – could also encourage other governments, private companies and non-government organisations to do the same.

Enduring Freedom...

A few years ago the Court of justice of Turnhout (Belgium) that covered the Zandvoort child pornography case decided that Morkhoven-activist Marcel Vervloesem and his alleged victims who were regular vistors of the gay bar Berkenmus in Morkhoven, had to submit a polygraph.

Only Marcel Vervloesem and one of the alleged victims were invited.

The polygraph test told that Marcel Vervloesem was telling the truth.

The so called victim began to cry and refused the test.

Afterwards nobody was no longer required to go to the polygraph.

The Court of justice of Turnhout concealed these facts.

It was just a way to continue the political trial against Marcel Vervloesem and to cover up the Zandvoort case.

Specialists say that screenings with a computer has no scientific basis and is abused to intimidate and accuse people.

‘IDF intelligence chief: Israel’s next war will see heavy casualties’

In farewell meeting at the Knesset, Gen. Amos Yadlin says next conflict will hit Israel far harder than recent wars in Lebanon and Gaza – and hints for first the time at Israeli involvement in a 2007 strike on a nuclear plant in Syria.

In a final meeting at the Knesset, outgoing Military Intelligence chief Amos Yadlin warned on Tuesday that Israel’s next war would be fought on several fronts – causing far heavier damage and casualties than other recent conflicts. A new war would be far deadlier than Israel’s last two, relatively short, conflicts in Lebanon in 2006 and Gaza in 2008-9. Syria, particularly, posed a greated military obstacle to Israel than at any time in the past three decades, Yadlin said, having amassed advanced Russian-built antiaircraft missiles that seriously limited the operational freedom of the Israel Air Force. Yadlin also hinted at Israel’s involvement in attacking a Syrian nuclear facility in September 2007. That strike has been widely attributed to Israel, but the government has never officially taken responsibility for the operation. The veteran soldier, who turns 60 next year, told the committee that during his position as MI chief he had contended with two enemy nuclear programs – apparently a reference to Iran and Syria. Yadlin also warned of a growing threat from the Iranian nuclear program, saying Iran now had enough highly enriched uranium to build a bomb.

Margaret Thatcher 1925-2013: How she bashed miners and the unions but backed yuppies

9 Apr 2013

Margaret Thatcher's second term saw Britain's economy boom... but prosperity for the rich was paid for by millions of working men and woman.

The result was that the 80s saw Britain under Thatcher bitterly divided - while champagne corks popped in the City, the unions reeled from her assault on organised labour.

In the spectacular stock-market boom of the late 80s, Britain's rich became even richer.

Half of all the tax breaks brought in during Thatcher's 11 years in office went to the top 10%.

The Big Bang which revolutionised the way the City of London operated, throwing out hundreds of years of safeguards, brought untold riches to City spivs as Thatcher sold off the family silver, privatising state-run utilities such as British Gas and British Telecom.

A flurry of privatisations followed - of electricity and airlines - which raised a fortune for the Treasury.

City whizzkids, nicknamed yuppies, short for Young Upwardly-mobile Professionals, made huge bonuses by shifting money around the globe, contributing nothing but their ability to play a market.

All the while, government-backed ad campaigns like "Tell Sid" promised more easy money by urging ordinary folk to become shareholders and gamble their savings on the stock market roller-coaster.

"Loadsamoney" was the mantra of the era and, in a move that would decimate social housing for decades to come, Thatcher encouraged tenants to buy their homes at knock-down prices to cash in on the property boom in the hope that former council renters would be transformed into Tory voters.

But before she could bring in these changes, Thatcher had to rid the country of worker power - the Enemy Within, as she scandalously described ordinary members of trade unions.

With a landslide majority, she ruthlessly attacked the trade-union movement, leaving British workers exposed to exploitation, and destroying whole industries.

For some, it remains the greatest achievement of her years in office. She was a free marketeer and to achieve her aim she cared little for the lives of theworkers and their families.

Problems with the unions were endemic: Labour governments suffered from them as much as the Tories. But they had more difficulties dealing with them, as any action against the unions was seen as treachery. Thatcher had no such divided loyalties.

But she knew the pitfalls - she had served under Edward Heath and seen his government ground down by the unions.

So she started her industrial reforms slowly, with small changes. She did not want to confront the unions, she wanted to outflank them by appealing above the heads of their dyed-in-the-wool left-wing leaders to the rank-and-file membership. She marginalised their leaders, refusing to meet them.

The first legislation in 1980 banned secondary picketing but not secondary strike action.

It did not go far enough for her right-wingers - there was no withdrawal of benefits from strikers' families, no opting in to the political levy for the Labour Party.

But it was clever. It was mild enough to leave the union leaders, baying for confrontation, isolated. A call for a "Day of Action" failed dismally as the vast majority went into work.

But when the steel unions started a bitter strike against the British Steel Corporation's plans to rationalise the industry and cut jobs, she defied her cabinet by announcing plans to cut strikers' benefits, and from then on her attack on the unions escalated. More legislation followed in 1982, 1984, 1988 and 1990.

The biggest beast in the union jungle was the National Union of Mineworkers. From the moment Thatcher took office, she started laying down plans to defeat them. She backed down from a confrontation in 1981, finding funds to keep uneconomic pits open, biding her time until she was battle-ready.

She won the minor skirmishes. In 1982, both the NHS workers and the railwaymen lost out after lengthy strikes and it seemed, for a time, as if some of the other unions were scared of taking her on. The NUM three times rejected the calls of their new President Arthur Scargill to strike, and British Leylandworkers also voted to accept a pay offer their leaders wanted to reject.

But in 1984, the gloves came off. Thatcher's government had secretly built up large stocks of coal at the power stations and had converted as many as possible to burn oil.

Fleets of road hauliers were recruited to move coal if the railwaymen came out on strike with the miners. The strike was precipitated by the appointment of Ian McGregor, a hardliner who had been running British Steel and who had a track record in America of beating a two-year mineworkers' strike.

To stem £250million-a-year losses, he proposed closing pits in Yorkshire, Scotland and South Wales. Scargill came from Yorkshire, his equally left-wing deputy, Mick McGahey, came from Scotland. Battle was inevitable.

Yorkshire, Scotland and the small Kent coalfield were solidly in favour of strike action. When Scargill called for an all-out strike, he set miner against miner, pit village against pit village.

In some cases he even set father against son, brother against brother. What followed was appalling. Police were recruited in huge numbers from forces across the UK.

There were pitched battles between them and the striking miners. Newspapers and television showed picture after picture of battered and injured men.

Miners' wives, in the meantime, set up soup kitchens and appeals were launched nationally for food to feed their children.

The worst fighting happened at Orgreave, near Sheffield, where 5,000 pickets tried to stop coal being moved to the Scunthorpe Steelworks. Even greater numbers of police, many on horseback, battled with them daily for three weeks. On the first day alone 104 police officers and 28 pickets were injured.

By the end, several hundred, including Scargill, had been arrested.

Tony Benn, MP for Chesterfield at the time of the strike, said: "They were skilled and courageous men who had built the prosperity of Britain. They were treated like criminals by Mrs Thatcher, and they were right economically as well. It's a story that will never be forgotten."

And Dennis Skinner, Labour MP for Bolsover, said: "It was an honourable dispute. It was the only strike I can recall that wasn't about pay but was about saving jobs for other people."

While there was much sympathy for the strikers, Scargill attracted hostility. He was too rabid, too unprepared to reason, too much of a bully. When he was discovered to have asked for money from Libya's notorious Colonel Gaddafi, it was a spectacular own goal. Labour leader Neil Kinnock and the TUC joined Thatcher in condemning him.

While Scargill and his men remained isolated, Thatcher knew she could win. There was enough coal at the power stations for 18 months' electricity: she was confident the NUM would crack by then. Although other unions expressed support, few did anything to actively help the strike, largely because many miners were still working.

The Government treated their pay claims leniently to keep them sweet.

By the end of October 1985, the miners started to drift back to work. It was clear the Government could sit out the winter, and they were given deferred bonuses for returning to work. But it was not until the following March, a whole bloody and bruising year since it started, that the union ordered the rest of its men back to the pits.

Thatcher had prolonged the strike by her unwillingness to compromise: she was as stubborn as Scargill. The difference was, she was the winner.

The following year more battles broke out between police and pickets, this time outside Rupert Murdoch's newspaper plant in London's Docklands.

Murdoch, a long-standing ally of Thatcher's, moved the workforce for his four newspapers, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun and the News of the World, to Wapping without including the print workers in the deal. It provoked another bloody and violent struggle, which again lasted for a year. Before it began, Thatcher had assured Murdoch he would have the police manpower needed to ensure victory.

While manufacturing industries went to the wall, Britain became the bargain basement where third-world countries came to buy machinery that was standing idle.

But a year after the miners' strike ended, a rare attempt by Thatcher's government to save a British company split her cabinet apart. Her legendary intransigence forced Defence Secretary Michael Heseltine, her long-standing Conservative Party foe, to resign over the notorious Westland affair.

Heseltine stormed out of a meeting at No10, saying his views on the future of the struggling Westland helicopter company, which had attracted rescue packages from the US and Europe, were being ignored.

Two weeks later Thatcher's trusted Trade and Industry Secretary Leon Brittan was forced to resign after admitting he had authorised the leaking of a government law officer's letter which criticised Heseltine.

Thatcher won the battle but in some ways Heseltine won the war. In 1990, he unsuccessfully challenged Thatcher for the Tory party leadership, triggering the series of political events that would ultimately lead to her downfall.

Thatcher's death: Thatcher created discord, not harmony

Britain.Thatcher.politics.jpg

Unlike Margaret Thatcher, miners believed in society

9 April 2013

Miners were the 'enemy within'. Their communities were targeted for destruction. If there is rejoicing at her death, bear this in mind

In 1984 Britain had 186 working coalmines and approximately 170,000 coalminers. Today we have four coalmines and around 2,000 miners. They lived in close-knit communities built around and based on employment at the local colliery. Miners were a hardy race of people who faced constant danger in the cause of mining coal but underneath that they were caring, sensitive individuals with a commitment to the communities in which they lived. They looked after their old and young as well as those who were ill or infirm.

They built and provided their own welfare facilities and, well before today's welfare state was built, miners created their own welfare systems to alleviate hardship. They rallied around each other when times were hard. They recognised the need for cohesion when at any time disaster could strike a family unit or indeed a whole community. The latest pit to close, Maltby in Yorkshire, still has a death and general purpose fund to help fellow miners and their families in times of hardship. In short, miners believed in society.

These values were the exact opposite of those Margaret Thatcher espoused. For miners, greed was a destructive force, not a force for good. From the valleys of Wales to the far reaches of Scotland, miners were, by and large, socialists by nature but this was tempered by strong Christian beliefs. Thatcher's threat to butcher the mining industry, destroy the fabric of mining communities and in particular the trade union to which miners had a bond of loyalty, was met with the fiercest resistance any government has met in peacetime.

For those miners and their families to be referred to as the "enemy within" by Thatcher was something they would never forgive and, if there is rejoicing at her death in those communities she set out to destroy, it can only be understood against this background.

Miners had always known that eventually any of the colleries would close and were always prepared to accept that as a fact of life and find employment somewhere else within the industry, but Thatcher's attack was wholesale. It was seen for what it was, nothing to do with economics, but purely an attempt to destroy the National Union of Mineworkers by wiping out the entire industry.

Thatcher exposed the sharp edges of class division in Britain and the strike of 1984/5 was as much a clash of values as it was about pit closures. Arthur Scargill and the miners represented the only opposition to the prime minister and her destructive and divisive values and, after the strike, the way was open for the most aggressive neoliberal policies. Thatcher and Reagan went on to facilitate a colossal transfer of wealth from poor to rich, leading to the world economic crash we now witness.

Thatcher was a divisive woman who created discord, not harmony.

Thatcher's death: Party in London

Thatcher.1984.miners.jpg

London neighbourhood throws party on Thatcher's death

9 Apr 2013

London: Hundreds of people took to the main square in Brixton, an area of south London which suffered serious rioting in the 1980s, to celebrate the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Holding notices saying "Rejoice -- Thatcher is dead", around 200 people gathered in the neighbourhood, a hotspot of alternative culture, and toasted her passing by drinking and dancing to hip-hop and reggae songs blaring from sound systems.

"I'm very, very pleased. She did so much damage to this country," said one man brandishing an original newspaper billboard from 1990 announcing Thatcher's resignation. Others scrawled "Good Riddance" on the pavement.

"We've got the bunting out at home," said Clare Truscott, a woman in her 50s wearing a sparkly beret and holding a homemade sign reading "Ding dong, the witch is dead".

"I'm from the north, where there were no jobs, where the industry was rapidly disappearing, and her policies ensured it went more quickly."

Brixton was the scene of fierce riots in 1981, two years after Thatcher became prime minister. Carole Roper, a full-time career in her 50s from north London, said: "We're here to celebrate her death."

Sipping from a can of beer, she insisted: "I don't think it's vindictive -- it's not so much about the death of Thatcher but what she has done, the policies she introduced to this country.

"Compare the coverage to that when Chavez died -- she's being eulogized. It's been wall to wall coverage on the BBC but she did nothing to help the poor people of this country."

Meanwhile, in the Scottish city of Glasgow more than 300 people gathered to hold their own impromptu "party". Anti-capitalist campaigners shouted, "Maggie, Maggie, Maggie" while the crowd replied "dead, dead, dead". The crowd also broke into a chorus of "So long, the witch is dead" while drinking champagne.

Thatcher, the controversial "Iron Lady" who dominated a generation of British politics and won international acclaim for helping to end the Cold War, died following a stroke on Monday. She was 87.

Photo: Police take action as violence flares with miners at Daw Mill colliery in Warwickshire, UK, in this 1984 file photo. It was a defining moment in British industrial relations, and its defeat significantly weakened the British trades union movement. It was also seen as a major political and ideological victory for Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party. The miners’ strike ended 28 years ago and there has been no softening of the anger toward Thatcher, according to John Kane, a miner for 37 years and now a guide at the Scottish Mining Museum, south of Edinburgh.

Margaret Thatcher: Iron Lady who remade Britain

England.birmingham_poverty.jpg

The UK is a democratic country; its citizens enjoy freedom and equality. It is both one of the richest countries in the world and one of the most expensive countries to live in. You may think that a country such as this would be practically free of poverty. However, almost one-quarter of the population lives in poverty – this accounts for nearly 13 million people, including a third of all children. At the same time some of the richest people in the world live in the UK. Does this make Britain an equal society?

What is poverty?

The United Nations defines poverty as a 'lack of capabilities to live a long, healthy and creative life, to be knowledgeable, and to enjoy a decent standard of living, dignity, self-respect, and the respect of others'.

If someone's household income in the UK is below 60% of average household income, then they are considered to be living in poverty.

Effects of poverty in the UK

Children living in poverty are less likely to do well in their education than children who are from wealthier households.

They are also more likely to suffer from health problems, lower life expectancy and low employment prospects. 18% of children go without two or more essential items such as warm clothes and three meals a day. Just under ten million people can't afford safe, warm housing and have to live in cold, damp conditions.

Children, women and the elderly are the worst hit by poverty. Those living in poverty often have to face humiliation and a feeling of helplessness as they are judged and seen as second-class citizens, with many people expressing the view that those in poverty are to blame for their difficulties.

Pro-Palestinian demonstration in London

Pro-Palestinian activists.London.16.11.12.jpg

Pro-Palestinian activists have held a demonstration outside the Israeli embassy in London to protest the ongoing strikes by the Tel Aviv regime against the coastal territory.

The protest, which took place on Thursday evening, had been called by Stop-the-War Coalition, a UK group that campaigns against what it believes are unjust wars. Calling for the rally, the group warned against the incidence of a “Gaza massacre,” the DigitalJournal.com global media network reported.

“Unless something is done to stop the violence…we could see yet another humanitarian crisis…,” the coalition warned amid the continuation of Israel’s new wave of attacks against the enclave, which started on Wednesday and has so far killed at least 21 people.

Also on Thursday, the Arab Organization for Human Rights in Britain, an NGO that works on human rights issues in the Arab World, called on Egypt to “take urgent action” to save the Gaza Strip in the face of Israeli strikes.

The Israeli military frequently carries out airstrikes and other attacks on the Gaza Strip, saying the acts of aggression are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, in violation of international law, disproportionate force is always used and civilians are often killed or injured.

The attacks rage on while Israel keeps up its crippling blockade on Gaza, which it imposed on the enclave in 2007.

NATO is a threat to World Peace

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.jpg

Russia warns NATO of ‘unpleasant response’

Russia has warned that it may deliver an unpleasant “technical response” to NATO over the planned deployment of a NATO missile system in Europe.

"The Russian response is currently mostly virtual, political, and diplomatic in character, but under certain circumstances we would be forced to deliver a technical response, which I don't think you'll like," UPI quoted Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin as saying at a meeting with NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Moscow on Thursday.

The United States and NATO agreed to establish a missile system during a summit in Lisbon in 2010, but negotiations between Russia and the Western military alliance have foundered on NATO’s refusal to give Russia legal guarantees that the system would not target the country’s strategic nuclear deterrent.

Moscow has also called for the shared control of any missile system. Washington, however, refuses to share the system’s control with any third party.

In return, Russia has threatened to aim a new generation of missiles at military targets in Europe and to deploy its own missile interceptors in the Kaliningrad region on the Baltic Sea coast.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called NATO “a Cold War atavism,” saying the alliance should turn into a political organization.

"Why it (NATO) still exists in modern times, is just not clear. It is to a significant extent a throwback to the times of the Cold War," Putin said.

"I have always believed that NATO is a Cold War atavism. It was set up at a time, when there was a bipolar system in international relations. Today, that situation has changed therefore, it is hard to understand or justify why an organization such as NATO should be existing today,” the president added.

Russia has repeatedly objected to the establishment of the NATO missile system, saying the country is the main target of the system as it possesses a significant number of nuclear weapons. It is clear that NATO is not a military defense system but a war machine in service of the American-European Empire.

Middle East: 'American Peace Process'...

Israeli settlers from Bracha settlement throw stones at Palestinian farmers.jpg

'Group of Arab States call on UNSC to take action against Israel'

The Group of Arab States in the United Nations has called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to act on Israel’s violation of human rights against the Palestinian people.

"The Arab Group deplores the continuous Israeli violations against the Palestinian population in the occupied Palestinian territory, including the blockade, aerial bombardments and extrajudicial killings,” said a Monday statement read out by the Egyptian permanent representative to the United Nations Mootaz Ahmadein Khalil.

Addressing the UNSC in an open meeting on the latest developments in the Middle East, particularly the issue of Palestine, Khalil reiterated that the aggressions against the people of Palestine by Israeli settlers has “reached unprecedented levels.”

Israeli settlers, mostly armed, regularly attack Palestinian villages and farms and set fire to their mosques, olive groves and other properties in the occupied West Bank under the so-called “price tag” policy. However, the Tel Aviv regime rarely detains the assailants.

"The desecration of Christian and Muslim shrines in the occupied territories including the recent 'price tag' attacks against churches and the storming of al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem this month, deserve special attention,” Khalil said.

“The recent threats to launch a full military operation against Gaza are additional reminders about the intentions of the occupying power," he added.

More than half a million Israelis live in over 120 illegal settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The Israeli settlements are considered illegal by the UN and most countries because those territories were captured by Israel in a war in 1967, and are hence seen as being subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbids construction on occupied lands.

Who's responsible for terrorist attacks and the suffering of the Syrian people ?

Obama signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for Syrian terrorists seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government.  Obama’s order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence “finding,” broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the terrorists oust Assad.  C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey. The weapons, including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons, are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The United States is setting up joint military, intelligence and medical working teams with Israel, Turkey and Jordan.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Britain would step up its support for the armed groups in Syria, providing them with an additional £5 million (US$7.8 million). The money is used for bomb attacks in Syria.

Stop the bombings of Pakistan !

US.drone.attack.jpg

Sep 7, 2012

Thousands of Pakistani demonstrators have taken to the streets in Pakistan's northwestern town of Nowshera to voice their outrage at the increasing US assassination drone attacks in the tribal belt of the country, Press TVreports.

On Thursday, the demonstrators staged a protest rally in the Nowshera, located almost 50 kilometers northeast of Peshawar, the capital of the violent northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, condemning the US terror drone attacks.

Chanting anti-US slogans, the angry demonstrators harshly criticized the authorities for failing to end the US airstrikes in the tribal areas during the rally organized by Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan's most powerful Islamic political party.

“We have organized this rally to express our anger at the frequent US drone attacks in the tribal regions. We are struggling to restore peace and bring Islamic revolution in Pakistan,” said Iftikhar Ahmad one of the organizers of the protest to Press TV.

Pakistani tribal regions are the target of US terror drones, with Washington claiming that its unmanned aircraft are targeting militants. However, casualty figures clearly indicate that Pakistani civilians are the main victims of the assaults.

“Our party [Jamaat-e-Islami] has always opposed the US assassination drone attacks in our country... the government as well as the military has utterly failed to provide safety for the poor innocent people,” said Asif Luqman Qazi, the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The killing of Pakistani civilians, including women and children, in the strikes has strained relations between Islamabad and Washington, prompting Pakistani officials to send warnings to the US administration over the assaults.

Despite the Pakistani government’s repeated calls on Washington to end the drone attacks, the US government continues its strikes on the tribal regions of the country.

The US terror drone attacks in Pakistan have increased during the administration of US President Barack Obama.

The strikes have triggered massive anti-US demonstrations across Pakistan to condemn the United States’ violations of their national sovereignty.

Chemical weapons: an excuse for intervening militarily

Chinese state media have accused US President Barack Obama of planning to use Syria's chemical weapons as an excuse for intervening militarily.

The state news agency, Xinhua, was responding to a warning from Mr Obama that Syria would be crossing a "red line" if it tried to use such weapons.

Once again (Iraq, Libya,), Western powers are digging deep for excuses to intervene militarily.

As a reminder: Libyan ship with aid supplies for Gaza...

14 July 2010

A ship loaded with aid supplies for Gaza has docked in an Egyptian port, ending the latest attempt by activists to break Israel's Gaza blockade.

The vessel was intercepted by Israeli naval ships off the coast of Gaza and forced to head south, the charity which chartered the ship said.

The charity, headed by Col Muammar Gaddafi's son, said it wanted to reach Gaza, but would not risk violence.

In May, Israeli forces clashed with another convoy, killing nine on board.

On Monday, an Israeli military inquiry said it had found mistakes were made at a senior level during the operation, which sparked international outrage, but the troops had been justified in using force.

'Blocked'

The Libyan-chartered Amalthea left Greece on Saturday, carrying food and medical equipment, as well as 15 pro-Palestinian activists and 12 crew members.

Egyptian officials at El-Arish, some 50km (30 miles) to the west of Gaza, said the ship docked at the north Sinai port late on Wednesday.

"As soon as the ship arrives in El-Arish, Egyptian authorities will unload its cargo and hand the aid to the Egyptian Red Crescent, which will deliver it to the Palestinian side," Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said earlier.

The vessel was intercepted by Israeli navy boats some 100km (60 miles) off the coast of Gaza and blocked from heading any further towards the east.

An Al-Jazeera correspondent on board said that Israeli navy boats had formed a "wall" on one side of the Amalthea and forced it towards El-Arish.

Israel's navy began shadowing the vessel overnight, after warning that it would not be allowed to break the naval blockade of Gaza.

The Amalthea resumed its voyage mid-morning on Wednesday after idling for a few hours in international waters.

The Israeli military said the ship had run into engine trouble, but the ship's owner later told the BBC that it was a ploy by the captain to buy time for the Libyan charity to muster international support.

A spokesman for the Gaddafi Foundation said those on board would not resort to violence.

"First and foremost, we want to arrive in Gaza," Yussef Sawani told Al-Jazeera TV. "If this is impossible, we don't want to subject anyone to danger."

Israeli officials denied the group's reports that they were given an ultimatum to change course by midnight or face a forceful takeover.

Humanitarian aid

The 92m (302ft) Amalthea, renamed Al-Amal (Hope) for the mission, is loaded with 2,000 tonnes of food, cooking oil, medicines and pre-fabricated houses, the group says.

For the past three years, Israel has enforced a tight economic blockade on the Gaza Strip, only allowing in limited humanitarian aid.

It says this is necessary to stop weapons for Palestinian militant groups inside Gaza being smuggled in, and to put pressure on the Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the coastal territory.

Egypt has also closed its border with Gaza, only opening it occasionally.

The blockade, maintained by Israel and Egypt, was widely described as "collective punishment" resulting in a humanitarian crisis for Gaza's 1.4 million people.

Last month, Israel announced it would ease restrictions by allowing consumer goods into the territory while banning or restricting trade in weapons and materials that could have a military use.

Meanwhile, Israel's parliament voted on Tuesday to strip an Israeli Arab lawmaker of some key privileges for joining the flotilla of aid ships that tried to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza in May.

The Knesset decided to remove Hanin Zuabi's diplomatic passport and funding for legal defence.

Some MPs complained that by penalising an Arab member, the parliamentarians were endangering democracy, but others said that it was her actions which threatened freedoms and rights in Israel.

Ms Zuabi, an MP with the left-wing Arab nationalist Balad party, said the Knesset was punishing her out of vengeance and was threatening co-existence between Jews and Arabs.

'Obama Warns Syria Not to Use Chemical Weapons'...

The United States last week began laying plans for the contingency of Syrian chemical warfare by setting up joint military, intelligence and medical working teams with Israel, Turkey and Jordan, all of which are feared under threat by Syrian president Bashar Assad, debkafile’s military sources report.

Photo: A baby in Tu Du Hospital suffering from the consequences of Agent Orange being dropped on Vietnam 30 years ago.

——-

Victims of American chemical weapons

As the United States is the most advanced industrial nation in world it was able to make full use of the latest developments in technology in its war against North Vietnam. B-52 bombers, that could fly at heights that prevented them being seen or heard, dropped 8 million tons of bombs on Vietnam between 1965 and 1973. This was over three times the amount of bombs dropped throughout the whole of the Second World War and worked out at approximately 300 tons for every man, woman and child living in Vietnam.

As well as explosive bombs the United States Air Force dropped a considerable number of incendiary devices. The most infamous of these was napalm, a mixture of petrol and a chemical thickner which produces a tough sticky gel that attaches itself to the skin. The igniting agent, white phosphorus, continues burning for a considerable amount of time. A reported three quarters of all napalm victims in Vietnam were burned through to the muscle and bone (fifth degree burns). The pain caused by the burning is so traumatic that it often causes death.

The US also made considerable use of anti-personnel bombs. The pineapple bomb was made up of 250 metal pellets inside a small canister. Gloria Emerson, a reporter in Vietnam, witnessed their use: “An American plane could drop a thousand pineapples over an area the size of four football fields. In a single air strike two hundred and fifty thousand pellets were spewed in a horizontal pattern over the land below, hitting everything on the ground.”

The United States also experimented with the use of plastic rather than metal needles and pellets in their antipersonnel bombs. The advantage of plastic was they could not be identified by X-Ray machines. Dropped on highly populated areas, antipersonnel bombs could severely disrupt the functioning of North Vietnam. It has been claimed that the major objective of the US bombing raids on North Vietnam was not to kill its 17 million population but to maim them. As was pointed out at the time, serious injury is more disruptive than death as people have to be employed to look after the injured where they only have to bury the dead.

One of the major problems of the US forces was the detection of the National Liberation Front hiding in the forests of Vietnam. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy approved Operation Ranch Hand. This involved the spraying of chemicals from the air in an attempt to destroy the National Liberation Front hiding places. In 1969 alone, Operation Ranch Hand destroyed 1,034,300 hectares of forest. Agent Orange, the chemical used in this defoliation programme not only destroyed trees but caused chromosomal damage in people.

Chemicals were also sprayed on crops. Between 1962 and 1969, 688,000 agricultural acres were sprayed with a chemical called Agent Blue. The aim of this exercise was to deny food to the NLF. However, research suggests that it was the civilian population who suffered most from the poor rice harvests that followed the spraying.

When a report appeared in the St. Louis Dispatch about the dropping of “poison” on North Vietnam the United States denied the herbicide they were using was a chemical weapon. It was claimed that Agent Orange and Agent Blue were harmless to humans and only had a short-lived impact on the environment.

This was disputed by international experts and 5,000 American scientists, including 17 Nobel prize winners and 129 members of the Academy of Sciences, signed a petition against chemical and biological weapons being used in Vietnam. However, it was not until 1974 that the United States government stopped using Agent Orange and Agent Blue.

During the war about 10% of Vietnam was intensively sprayed with 72 million litres of chemicals, of which 66% was Agent Orange. Some of this landed on their own troops and soon after the war ended veterans began complaining about serious health problems. There was also a high incidence of their children being born limbless or with Down’s syndrome and spina bifida. The veterans sued the defoliant manufacturers and this was settled out of court in 1984 by the payment of $180 million.

The TCCD dioxin used in Agent Orange seeped into the soil and water supply, and therefore into the food chain. In this way it passed from mother to foetus in the womb. In Vietnam the dioxide remains in the soil and is now damaging the health of the grandchildren of the war’s victims.

A report published in 2003 claimed that 650,000 people in Vietnam were still suffering from chronic conditions as a result of the chemicals dropped on the country during the war. Since the war the Vietnamese Red Cross has registered an estimated one million people disabled by Agent Orange. It is estimated that 500,000 people in Vietnam have died from the numerous health problems created by these chemical weapons.

Forms of Napalm

Napalm B is chemically distinct from its predecessor Napalm. It is usually a mixture of polystyrene and benzene, used as a thickening agent to make jellied gasoline. One of the advantages of this new mixture lies in its increased safety while being handled and stored. Many accidents had been attributed to personnel smoking around stockpiles.

Napalm B has a commonly quoted composition of 21% benzene, 33% gasoline (itself containing between 1% and 4% (estimated) benzene to raise its octane number), and 46% polystyrene. This mixture is more difficult to ignite than napalm. A reliable pyrotechnic initiator, often based on thermite (for ordinary napalm) or white phosphorus (for newer compositions), has been used. The original napalm usually burned for 15 to 30 seconds while napalm B can burn for up to 10 minutes.

Napalm B was used in flamethrowers and bombs by American and Allied forces in World War II. It is believed by some that Napalm B is formulated to burn at a specified rate and to adhere to surfaces to increase its stopping power. (See below for quote from an army colonel for evidence of such efficacy whether intended or not.) During combustion, Napalm rapidly deoxygenates the available air and generates large amounts of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Napalm bombs were used during the Vietnam War.

Napalm was also used during the Korean War.

“Napalm is the most terrible pain you can imagine,” said Kim Phúc, a napalm bombing survivor known from a famous Vietnam War photograph. “Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius (212°F). Napalm generates temperatures of 800 (1,500°F) to 1,200 degrees Celsius (2,200°F).

Turkey-Syria Relations

Turkey.Felicity Party,Mustafa Kamalak.jpg

The leader of Turkey's Felicity Party, Mustafa Kamalak, has warned that his country is the main target of the campaign against neighboring Syria.

Referring to the current developments in the Middle East, Kamalak also warned about “imperial powers' plots to disintegrate Turkey.”

Ankara has already been under fire for supporting Syrian insurgents and giving them arms.

Turkish lawmaker Mevlut Dudu has accused the Turkish government of using ambulances to smuggle arms and ammunitions into Syria.

Dudu warned Ankara of the repercussions of arming insurgents, criticizing Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for leading the country into a predicament by intervention in Syrian affairs.

Meanwhile, a senior Iranian military official criticized Turkey and a number of other regional states for interfering in Syria's internal affairs.

Chairman of Iran’s Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff Major General Hassan Firouzabadi denounced on Monday Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar for their support for the “the warmongering goals of the United States and the bloodshed” in Syria.

On Thursday, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for an immediate end to violence against civilians in Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed insurgents are foreign nationals.

Turkey-Syria Relations Progressing

The Financial Times reports on Turkey's efforts to push forward on cultural and economic ties with its eastern neighbours, chief amongst them Syria:

Every Friday, tour buses pull up outside the Sanko Park shopping centre in Gaziantep, an industrial city near Turkey’s southern border with Syria.

They are Syrians coming from Aleppo – just a few hours drive over the border – to snap up electronic goods and shop in fashion chains, from Mango to Marks & Spencer, that are unavailable at home. They now make up about one in 20 of the 850,000 customers each month, spending an average of $120 a head and prompting the mall to open an office that will refund VAT on the spot.

“Syria is Turkey 20 years ago,” says Emin Berk, who runs a new office to encourage small business dealings between Gaziantep and Aleppo. “Gaziantep is the first stop out of Syria: it’s more developed and it has better shopping.”

The cross-border spending sprees are one of the most visible effects of a recent rapprochement between Turkey and Syria, part of Ankara’s drive to strengthen ties with its eastern neighbours, using trade and cultural links to increase its “soft power” in the Middle East.

The two countries scrapped visa requirements last autumn to seal their friendship – a striking reversal of the tension of earlier decades, when Turkey was suspected of planting bombs in Damascus in retaliation for Syria’s sheltering of Kurdish separatists. Landmines still pepper the border that tourists now cross freely, but the new allies are even holding joint military exercises.

Nor is Turkey’s aim purely diplomatic. Officials hope their country’s exporters will tap fresh markets, and create jobs in the poorest south-eastern regions of the country – where unemployment and poverty fuel a sense of grievance among ethnic Kurds, and government subsidies have so far had little effect in attracting investment.

In a statement published on its website on Friday, the Ministry added that the western partners and some regional countries who could influence the opposition have done nothing towards this, rather they were continuing provision of political, technical and financial aid to the opposition's armed groups and thus encouraging them to further reject dialogue.

The Ministry stressed that these countries have not committed themselves to the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the Geneva meeting.

The statement said Russia gave all support to Annan and worked with the Syrian government and opposition with the aim of encouraging full cooperation to implement Annan's peace plan.
